MOULIN ROUGE (2001)

Director: Baz Luhrmann

Writer: Baz Luhrmann, Craig Pearce

Nicole Kidman as Satine, Ewan McGregor as Christian, also John Leguizamo, Jim Broadbent, Richard Roxburgh.

The third in Luhrmann's 'Red Curtain Trilogy' - although the term trilogy must be used lightly as it is not in plot or characters that Strictly Ballroom, Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge are linked, but rather in a drenched visual style, saturated with glitter and frenzied editing. Moulin Rouge is either re-inventing the musical or a sloppy jumble of images attempting to hide dodgy characters and story. Watch it and decide for yourself. It's certainly a visual overload/feast, and interesting for that at least. Another commercial hit from Australia's Mr.Flamboyance, only time will tell it's true status amongst Australian cinema.
