THEY'RE A WEIRD MOB (1966)

Director: Michael Powell

Writer: John O'Grady (from his novel) and Emeric Pressburger

Walter Chiari as Nino
Clare Dunne as Kay
Also Ed Deveraux, John Mellion

Coming after a particularly long dry spell in Australian cinema, this film was a welcome sign of life that would soon blossom into the New Wave. A smart and charming film, still standing up well as a story and, being an examination of multiculturalism, as thematically current as when it was made. Chiari is excellent as Nino, and the directing from Powell is an inspired look at a slice of Australian life with the freshness of outsider's eyes.
